Roberty Marroquin Fighter of the Year.
Roberto Marroquin Fighter
of the Year.
Fighter of the Year: Roberto Marroquin - Marroquin was one point shy of finishing the year as the unanimous choice as NTB’s Pound for Pound #1 fighter. So we racked our brains trying to figure out who did the most in 2009 between our top two finishers.  In 2009, Marroquin was 6-0 with 5 KO’s; Hatley was 7-0 with 7 KO's.  Marroquin fought as high as 123 1/2 and as low as 119 1/2, while Hatley ranged from 161 3/4 to 148 1/4.  In terms of their opponents, Marroquin's foes had a 55% winning record. Hatley's victims had a 51% winning record. Based on actual numbers, Hatley fought more, registered more KO's and competed in more weight classes, but Marroquin fought slightly better opposition. The bottom line is, both of these young men represent the very best that North Texas had to offer in 2009. Selecting just one for "Fighter of the Year" was like picking between Taylor Swift and Beyonce. (Kanye brought it up first.) A hard decision without really a wrong answer; but our nod by a very small margin goes to Robert. Congratulations young man, you deserve it.

2009 NTB Fight of the Year.
2009 Fight of the Year.
Fight of the Year: Arthur Trevino vs. Albert Romero - On a cold October night, at an outdoor venue, Paulie Ayala Promotions’ inaugural boxing card was instantly heated up by this memorable toe-to-toe slugfest.  From the outset, Romero set a blistering pace, but Trevino gladly obliged.  Both men were visibly hurt, cut and enjoyed shifts in momentum as the appreciative audience roared in approval.  In the fourth and final round, Trevino sealed the deal with a knockdown to win a close, majority decision.

Comeback Fighter of the Year: Arthur Trevino - After a nearly 3 year absence, Ft. Worth's Arthur Trevino returned in 2009, going 3-0 with 1 KO, including an unforgettable win in a war with Albert Romero.

Luis Yanez busting onto the scene in 2009.

the scene in 2009.
Newcomer of the Year: Luis Yanez - In his first year as a professional, the 2008 United States Olympian remained undefeated and won the Texas State Super Flyweight title.  Expect to see Yanez ranked highly on North Texas Boxing's pound for pound list and in the mix for "Fighter of the Year" by the end of 2010.

Round of the Year: Round 1, Brent Urban vs. Chad Johnson - With a large, supportive hometown fan base backing him, the "Oak Cliff Ghost" Brent Urban stole the show on the Black Gloves Promotions’ July card at Gilley's.  Urban's opponent, Chad Johnson came out firing and received the benefit of a knockdown incorrectly ruled against Urban.  Upon rising, Brent was angered, dispensed with the game plan and initiated fierce exchanges, which he got the better of. A body shot dropped Johnson to his knees and a standing ovation ensued as the bell rang to end round 1. The contest got progressively more one-sided, with Johnson visiting the canvas again in the third and for good in the fourth, but round one supplanted itself as North Texas Boxing's "Round of the Year".
