Media Day Two: Pacquiao vs. Clottey

Tuesday, March 9, 2010 was one of those days Dallas, Texas boxing fans have waited for. The pound for pound king of the ring, Manny “the Pacman” Pacquiao was finally here. As we waited outside, press and fans alike, anticipation and excitement was truly in the air. After the media had made its way in, the quiet roar of fans came rumbling in. They quickly gathered as close to the ring as possible, and shouts of “Manny”, “Manny” rang out.

After what seemed forever, the Pacman finally appeared and entered the ring, while the crowd of approximately 400 people roared their approval. He was gracious and acknowledged them with a big smile on his face. To the delight of Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, Top Rank head honcho, Bob Arum, told a story about a bottle of wine Jerry Jones had ordered in a New Orleans restaurant, which apparently had been given to Sean Payton of the Saints instead. Therefore, the Pacman wanted to return the favor and gave Jerry Jones a bottle of his favorite wine.

The Workout:  Pacquiao began with basic stretching and then his head trainer, Freddie Roach, put on a full upper body guard to begin the real workout. As Manny moved around the ring, he threw lightning fast punches at his Roach. His footwork was incredible to watch. A master at his craft it was apparent why he is a seven-time world champion.

He then shadowboxed in the ring, his shadowboxing was not slow, it was fast. Very fast. Once, when asked what was the most important thing that Manny could teach other boxers about being a champion, Roach said, “discipline”. It was also reported Roach went on to say that, “A Pac Man only comes along once in a lifetime…”.

After shadowboxing, Pacman began what someone at ringside said were “seven minute drills”, which consisted of hitting the mitts. Not only was the speed apparent, but the power in his punches was soundly heard. After the first session of his workout, his trainer told him to rest, but the Pacman said, “let’s go”, and kept on punching for at least another three minutes. He rested and then continued the drill at least two more times before taking off the gloves. Applause was heard from the crowd. He finished with some jump roping and then more shadow boxing in the center of the ring.

Fight fans will not be disappointed Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium. This sentiment was acknowledged by Pacman’s younger brother Bobby Pacquiao, who is a professional boxer as well. He told North Texas Boxing that Pacman is in great condition and ready to fight. (030910)
